The supermassive star Eta Carinae, possible the most massive star known in our galaxy, more than 100 times as massive as the sun, Eta Carinae has been puzzling astronomers for more than 150 years.
In 1833, it started producing a great burst of energy and by 1841 had become the second brightest star in the sky, radiating more than four million times as much energy as the sun. The explosion produced this pair of huge, billowing clouds of gas and dust. The material is all moving outward at speeds of between 1.5 and 2 million miles per hour.
